Walpole Park is one of West London’s loveliest parks, with tree lined boulevards, ornamental ponds, fountains, exotic plants and beautiful expanses of lawns.
It is home to Pitzhanger Manor, the Grade 1 listed Regency period country house of Sir John Soane, the great 18th century architect to the Bank of England. Roots & Berries runs the café in the park, known as Pitzhanger Pantry.
It’s a busy place, tucked behind Ealing Green and the Broadway, the historic centre of what was once a country village, and what is today one of West London’s largest and most diverse boroughs. There’s a lot going on around the park, with the famous Ealing Television Studios next door, the University of West London, and a lot of art and culture. At the centre of this is Pitzhanger Manor and Gallery which together with Walpole Park, underwent a £15 million Heritage Lottery investment in 2015 to completely restore it to how it was in Soane’s day.
You can visit the Gallery where you’ll find world class art exhibitions, then tour the Manor and see up close Soane’s extraordinary work, each room a different example of how a design genius would choose to live. Afterwards, take a stroll into Walpole Park itself and walk around his parkland where he used to fish for trout with his friend, the great landscape artist JM Turner. It’s a wonderful place to relax, sit out on the lawn and enjoy some fresh air in a beautiful setting.
Then stop by for refreshments at Pitzhanger Pantry, at the heart of the park.
There, you’ll receive a warm welcome and can enjoy a cup of the best coffee in Ealing, a light lunch, Jude’s ice cream or a treat from the Roots & Berries bakery.
